Here is the girth of this thirty eight pounder. This fish tested my drag by performing five determined runs each time I had  made a bit of progress toward shore. Each run was many tens of yards of line. The danger in this is that the wound soon enlarges from the hook insertion at the mouth, increasing the chance of a lost fish. A perfectly set drag is a must. Only the best in equipment will enable you to catch these fish consistently as we do. They will test your knot tying ability. I lost many big carp on this session but never lose fish to failed knots. If you cannot tie a proper carp angling knot on your hooklenghts ,and don't know a strong shock leader knot, dont even come here.
